Dave Thompson has culled various interviews with past and present band members of Deep Purple and put together a very comprehensive book on the history of the band. Thompson did his homework. He traces DP back to their earliest formations and includes pre-DP band info from Ian Gillan and Roger Glover as well.
Every Deep Purple book to come before has concentrated on the classic Mark II era of the band and rightly so. The Blackmore, Paice, Gillan, Glover and Lord years are the best, hands down. Thompson, however, chooses to give a much wider view of the band… Deep Purple, like it or not, has a much richer history than many fans would care to admit. Included are many successes but also many times the bar was lowered — at times lowered a lot! Thompson gets every important member of Deep Purple to be honest about the highs and lows. While there is not a lot of ‘he said and she said’ type BS there is a load of historically important information that needs to be archived.
