Scene Magazine reviews Beyond Ego

this lucidly argued case for compassionate and visionary leadership is a message every employer needs to hear

Leadership in the business world can take many forms. Bosses who bully, bribe, cajole and catalyze their employees can be found in every sector of the workforce. But just as there can be a dearth of inspiration from the front office, effective managers and administrators can also become exemplars of sound judgment, empathy and accountability for their staff. These are among the qualities author Art Horn explores in his new book, Beyond Ego. Central to Horn's theme in the text is the idea of self-talk, the internal monologue from the unseen narrator of our lives. Often self-talk is the mouthpiece of ego, a component of the psyche Horn describes as seeing itself above, below or up against others. It is the ego which becomes the barrier to effective leadership, disconnecting executives from meaningful interaction with workers. Horn councils those in positions of authority to be mindful of self-talk. He encourages readers to diligently address those judgments poisoned by egocentric observation, noting that as an individual's self-talk is corrected, a new dynamic is introduced into the workplace. Managers are now free to relate to staff in a more genuine way, facilitating the accomplishment of mutual goals, fostering empathy and sustaining the sincere commitment to advance the interests of the business. Although the testimonials which appear at the end of Beyond Ego are of dubious value, this lucidly argued case for compassionate and visionary leadership is a message every employer needs to hear.
