When Nancy Wilson left Pacific University and joined Heart, her sister Ann's band, in the early 1970s, the sound of Northwest rock changed. The Wilsons merged their folksinger tendencies with a bunch of guys who liked to play Led Zeppelin covers, and Heart became a hit-making machine. Jake Brown's "Heart: In the Studio" (ECW Press, $19.95 paperback, 265 pages) puts the emphasis where it belongs -- on Ann Wilson's voice.
