Death Plays Poker

A Clare Vengel Undercover Novel
By
$14.95

World class poker players are being strangled in their hotel rooms, and Clare is given her second big assignment: to pose as a poker player in a major televised tournament, befriend the suspects, and find the killer in their midst.

Her cover role? A trust fund princess named Tiffany who thinks the poker tour is a better idea than college.

Though Clare would prefer to wear jeans and get her hands dirty, posing as Tiffany helps her infiltrate the inner circle quickly. And her flashy new wardrobe attracts the attentions of Noah — a dark stranger who's at the game for hidden reasons of his own. Rumors surface about a cheating ring that could be connected to the murders.

Clare loves the job and the game, but soon learns that there's no one she can trust. Her handlers doubt her every move — she has to fight to keep her job — and everyone she meets lies for a living.

As more victims lose their lives to the cunning Poker Choker, and her cover role’s legitimacy comes under attack from two directions, Clare wonders if her handlers are right: Should she pack it in and go home to a dull life as a beat cop? Or will she find the killer, prove her worth?

Clare is a mediocre undercover agent who desperately wants to stay in the game long enough to prove she can do the job. So she takes an undercover job as a spoiled rich girl who wants to get into the poker world. She's looking for the serial killer who has been killing poker players, including an undercover cop. I really enjoyed this book. I know very, very little about poker so was expecting to be confused. But the games were described in such a way that even a complete poker novice can follow. The characters were well developed and interesting. I really enjoyed Clare. She seemed real, believable and completely likeable. Her mistakes seemed to actually help her in a way, while keeping me amused. The author did a great job of keeping me clueless, almost to the end, on the identity of the killer. I received this book free of charge in exchange for my honest review.

I found this book a little slow in the beginning. But it was a quick read with short chapters from a variety of characters points of view. I liked being able to see the case from not only the main character (and undercover cop), Clare's, perspective, but also a few of the potential suspects.

I thought there was just enough references to actual poker hands and the way the game is played. Since Clare is a poker newbie as well, the reader kind of gets to learn along with her.

As the story progressed I got more and more interested in finding out who the killer was and I got through the book pretty fast. I had no idea how it was going to end, in regards to the actual case AND the side romantic storyline between Clare and Noah/Nate.

The only thing that annoyed me was how often the characters referred to the poker world as 'the scene'. Sometimes it would be 3 or 4 times on one page.

Overall, Death Plays Poker was a fast, entertaining mystery with engaging characters and an unpredictable ending.

That is a great book. I loved the story and learned lots of thing about poker world. small scale aquaponics
