Cecilian Vespers is the first book I’ve read by Anne Emery, but it certainly won’t be the last!  This is a good old fashioned mystery that would put Agatha Christie to shame.  The story takes us to Halifax, where a Catholic priest has started a school for traditional church music.  During the first series of classes, on the feast of St. Cecilia, one of the students is brutally murdered.  What follows is a great whodunit.  Is it the person who immediately confesses?  Maybe - maybe not.  We meet the other students who each have very distinctive personalities, as lawyer Monty Collins investigates. 
Interwoven with the good mystery is the ongoing debate about the effects of Vatican II.  The various students range from very conservative traditionalists to very liberal.  What makes this especially interesting is in the matter of motive for the murder.  Apparently the victim had enraged both ends of the spectrum over the past 40 years.
I recommend this book without reservation if you enjoy a genuinely good, exciting mystery with characters you really care about.
