TORONTO. February 7, 2008
Since 1979, a unique award conceived by CanLit champion Robert Weaver has fostered excellence in Canadian writers. The only literary competition that celebrates original unpublished work in both English and French, the CBC Literary Awards/ Prix littéraires is also judged blind. This levels the field for all entrants; excellence is considered on the merits of the writing alone. Sadly, Robert Weaver died on January 26th, 2008, just weeks before the 2007 CBC Literary Awards/ Prix littéraires.
The 2007 CBC Literary Awards/ Prix littéraires will be announced on Thursday, February 21st, 2008. At 11:30 am, CBC Radio One’s Eleanor Wachtel will unveil the English-language winners for poetry, short story and creative nonfiction, highlighting their outstanding literary achievements. Christiane Charette will announce the French-language winners starting at 9am the same day on La Première Chaîne de Radio-Canada.
To celebrate the 2007 award announcement and the 50th anniversary of the Canada Council for the Arts, ECW Press has released The Mind’s Eye: CBC Literary Awards Winners 2001-2006. The anthology includes the complete winning works, from 2001-2006, in each of the Award's three categories: short story, creative nonfiction, and poetry. In addition to the fifteen winning works, three French-language stories have been translated for inclusion. Three of the English works will be translated for inclusion in the French-language edition, to be simultaneously issued by XYZ Éditeur.
